Mark and Daniel went to Tynset to visit FKers from Malawi this week. Daniel sent this message: Today morning is really confusing here in Tynset, 30 below zero but with very good bright sun like that of Uganda. It’s hard to believe, but it’s real.

Nye norske deltakere søkes skoleåret 2010-11

PARTNERSKAP TELEMARK - UGANDA søker etter utvekslingslærere med undervisningskompetanse for Fredskorpsutveksling til tre videregående skoler i Uganda nær hovedstaden Kampala skoleåret 2010 -2011.
Fra utlysningstekst:
Utvekslingen etableres med bakgrunn i samarbeidsavtale med det norske Fredskorpset og er i tråd med Fredskorpsets visjon om utveksling for utvikling. Vårt prosjekt har som mål å utveksle kunnskaper om utdanningssystemer og læringsmetoder. De fire siste åra har prosjektet hatt ti norske og ti ugandiske deltakere.
Deltakerne deltar i undervisning og annet skoleretta arbeid på samarbeidsskolene i Uganda.
Innholdet tilpasses deltakerens kompetanse. Personlig egnethet vil bli vektlagt.

Utvekslingen varer i ti måneder. I tillegg kommer treukers forberedelseskurs i regi av Fredskorpset 13.09-01.10.2009. Utreise vil skje etter kurset. Hjemreise vil være i juli 2010. Deltakere må sette av tid til for og etterarbeid som utføres i samarbeid med Rjukan videregående skole. Reise og opphold dekkes etter FKs satser. Lønn etter rammetilskudd fastsatt av FK.

CAPACITY BUILDING Information Communication and Technology (ICT)

In helping to build capacity of teachers to integrating Information Communication and Technology (ICT) into the teaching and learning processes, in the three Ugandan schools that are in the Norwegian- Ugandan Schools’ Cooperation Project Telemark County Municipality in Norway has donated a total  laptops to the schools.

On behalf of their respective institutes, the head teachers/ principals of three Ugandan institutes expressed their sincere gratitude and appreciation towards Telemark County Municipality and the Norwegian Coordinators of the project-, for the generous donation.

The main objective of the exchange is to promote mutual exchange of knowledge, experiences and skills in the field of education.

Jentenes internat / Girls dormatory in St.Joseph

Jenteinternatet på St. Joseph skal være klart til skolestart 01.februar. Internatet er bygd av skolens elever og lærere, med blant annet utvekslingslærer Charles Kalema i spissen. Siden det blei kjent at St.Joseph skulle få jenteinternat har andelen jenter på skolen økt formidabelt, fra nesten ingen til femti. Skolens rektor regner nå med at de vil ha kapasitet til å ta hundre. Før skolen runder hundre år i 2011, vil forhåpentligvis jentene ha samme vilkår som gutta har hatt i 99 år.

Daniel teaching in BYGGFAG: Visiting students in constructional companies

According to the school curriculum, students for construction are supposed to work in companies such that they relate what they study to what is done in real job so on every Monday, they do not come to school, instead go to work in companies of there choice which suits there future careers in construction, ie house construction, road construction, water and sewage systems etc.

The Teachers visits these students, talk to them together with their supervisors in the company, to;
• Check on there attitude towards work.
• Check on how they relate with supervisors.
• Find out if they have problems.
• Advises and encourages them.

Mark's experience teaching Chemistry in Norway

Mark is teaching chemistry using the English language in the first, second and third grade classes in Rjukan videregående skole.

During his first period as chemistry teacher, Mark has noted down the following;

- a small number of students who offer chemistry especially at second and third grades.
- Teachers and students are punctual to class. The students arrive on time for lessons and come the end of lesson, they will not allow you to go beyond . If you  persist they may leave you in class.
- teachers endeavour to as much as possible plan for a practical activity in the science lessons to engage learners in doing things.
- students are given short breaks of about five minutes at the end of each period so they can relax a bit or ease themselves.
- A teacher does the full preparation of practical lessons .There are no laboratory technicians to assist in any kind of work.
- safety of students while in the laboratory is strictly observed. For instance;
 learners put on laboratory coats and hand gloves to avoid contact of chemical with skin
and use of pipette fillers and not sucking of liquid by mouth into pipette.
- learners have freedom to express their views both inside and outside class.They are open- minded ,love their teachers whom they address by first names .
However, they still remain respectful to the teachers.
- Subject content is not so detailed and is rather simplified .For instance learners are encouraged to use simple formula instead of arguing from first principles when dealing with questions about the mole concept.

Tidligere deltakere møtes til nettverksmøter. Det er viktig for å fortsette arbeidet med å være "endringsagent" på egen skole. Fram til i sommer hadde vi slike møter samtidig med partnermøtene. Nå har Peter H. Ssenyimba påtatt seg å organisere nettverksmøter minst en gang i halvåret.
