Prepare people for development, and prepare development for people

FK- participants and visitors from JA Uganda visited Telemark regional University college in Porsgrunn where we attended a presentation delivered by Professor Svein Thore Hagen in the Faculty of Technology on the theme “Use student enterprise as a learning method”

Professor Hagen informed us that at this university college students generate their own ideas which they develop with guidance from professors and teachers following the pedagogical platform. In guiding students, professor says that they follow the principles of development found in Lao Tse’s (Chinese Philosopher 500 B.C) saying, that ‘prepare people for development, and prepare development for people. Go in search for people live together with them, love them, learn from them, begin with what they have, build on what they know and when their task is done, they will remark; ‘we did this our selves”.
We also visited some groups of students working on different projects. One of the groups had a plan of making waste bins with different compartments for workshops and industries to enable them sort out their waste easily, an innovation which seem to be new and relevant in waste management.
